Cranbrook Master of Architecture Student (and fellow Drury HSA Alumnus), Kurt Brethauer, is taking his master thesis on the road this summer and needs your support. Smooth Operator is a souped up ’89 Ford Econoline van that serves a dual purpose as a personal living space and public observation deck.

Kurt’s thesis project is meant to reinvigorate the interest in american road culture and mobile architecture that was apparently predominate in the 1930s. All new news to me, but I am excited for any traveling exhibit that gets the public to think a little more about their built environment.

The project is already confirmed to be on exhibit at this year’s High Desert Test Sites, October 12-19th. The exhibit takes place desolate roads between Joshua Tree, California and Albuquerque, New Mexico.

  1. Look at the work of Bill Moss, Jennifer Siegal, Geoffrey Bruce, Frei Otto, Buro Happold, Todd Dolland and Nick Goldsmith – the latter two are Future Tents Limited in NYC. It might be inspirational for your project and ventures into tensile fabric structures.
